The Big Show [Comedy Festival]

Submitted by Hadyn on Friday, 09 May 2008.

On a cold Wednesday night all of the Wellingtonistas had plans or comedy-killing illnesses. So instead I recruited some good friends (Suchern and James) who were dying to see some good comedy, here's their review of the night:

Held in the "medieval wedding cake" the Big Show delivered the Big Laughs. Which is what one should expect when an Irishman, Englishman, Australian and American get together.

Well paced and MC'd by Aussie comedian and Edinburgh Fringe legend Mickey D, complete with a Maori accent obviously picked up in Auckland, kept the near capacity crowd in hysterics throughout. Personal highlight was wise cracking New Yorker Eddy Ifft, who had his very own "bushisms". Laura would not be amused.

Neil Delamere (Ireland) and John Fothergill (England) each with their own take on their homelands, Wellington and the battle of the sexes kept the laughs coming and did not disappoint.

Together the four complemented each other and presented a rare and rip-roaringly enjoyable chance to catch four internationally acclaimed comedians in one night. Not that the best of Kiwi comedians would be outclassed next to them, just that its nice to hear different voices occasionally.

Our only minor cribble, was an over reliance on the easier kind of jokes to make, the dirty/sexual/racial/Palmerston North kind. Only kidding about our wind powered friends, they will always amuse us.

Joke of the night "a quiche is just a pie with egg and bacon, who knew?". Classic.

The Big Show continues nightly until Saturday at the Opera House, get in while you can: The Big Show

Flight of the Conchords live at Arovideo - Wednesday 13th February

Submitted by Mike Riversdale on Tuesday, 12 Feb 2008.

BREAKING NEWS!

This just in from those fine folk at Arovideo:

It is our pleasure (and absolute thrill) to announce that Arovideo will be playing host to the hottest act in New Zealand (and possibly the world) right now, "Flight of the Conchords".

In support of the local release of their widely-acclaimed HBO TV show on DVD, Bret and Jemaine will be performing a short set live in store from 10am, Wednesday the 13th of February, at 97 Aro Street in Wellington.

Then from 10.30am until 12pm, they will be signing copies of the DVD, which will be available to buy on site at $39.95 for the 2-disc set.

Space limitations on the ground floor of our store mean this will be a very intimate, exclusive event indeed, and entry will be on a "first come, first served" basis. While we cannot guarantee you will gain entry for the performance itself, their should be ample opportunity to meet the guys, especially if you are armed with a copy of their fantastic DVD! There will be eftpos facilities available, though cash is recommended.

What more do you need to know people!

Flight of the Conchords - The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room

Okay, so there's enough Flight of the Conchords material from their HBO series making its way onto Youtube now for us to resurrect FotC Wednesday, so, without further ado, here's "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room"...

Flight of the Conchords: HBO Premiere

A little late today, still recovering from last night's bowling...

But worth the wait! The first episode of the Flight of the Conchords' HBO show is now online for your viewing pleasure.

(Hat-tips to the various people who were kind enough to point this out to us. Tobin, Jessie, and someone else who's name eludes me now.)

Wellington's favourite comedy export aren't here for the NZ International Comedy Festival (lots of good acts are though, click through for more info), so you'll just have to make do with our weekly wednesday Flight of the Conchords clip...

Flight of the Conchords: Something for the Ladies

Thankfully the boys' HBO show seems to be coming along nicely, so we should have a new source of clips anytime soon.

In the meantime, here's one for the ladies...

The comedy Festival hits town on Sunday
Yes just as we get those first blasts of winter and that lack of sun depression hits, people visit town with one purpose and one purpose alone: to make you Laugh.

The mighty Paramount Theater kicks off the Wellington Comedy Festival on Tuesday 8 May with the opening night extravaganza – First Laughs

If you can't make a decision on who to see my pick is Late Laughs at the San Francisco Bathhouse every Friday and Saturday night. Nothing beats a mix of comics cutting loose late at night, alcohol and their competitive instincts kick to make for for a rather excellent evening.

Flight of the Conchords: Bowie Song

It's Wednesday! Time for some Conchords...

Does the space cold make your nipples go all pointy?
And do you use your pointy nipples as telescopic antenna transmitting data back to Earth?
I bet you do you, you freaky old bastard you,
Do you have one really funky sequinned spacesuit, man?
Or do you have several ch-ch-ch-ch-changes?

Flight of the Conchords: Business Time

Submitted by noizyboy on Wednesday, 28 Mar 2007.

Wellington's fourth most popular digi-folk paradists are currently shooting their 12-part HBO comedy series in New York, with fellow Wellingtonians Taika Waititi directing a couple of shows, and Duncan Sarkies providing the script for one of the episodes.

All this, of course, is just an excuse to post some classic Flight of the Conchords for your listening enjoyment. Oooohhh yeahhhh, it's business time...
