Completely unpretentious and apolitical mystery bar

Submitted by The Masked Barfly on Sat, 2008-10-11 11:03.

As a fly, I obviously have some distasteful habits, and I am sometimes accused of buzzing too close to pretension or political bias. Well, I'm hardly going to change the habits of a lifetime, but just this once here's a mystery bar without a hint of pretension.

No burlesque dancers or pan-Mediterranean tapas here, mate! It's beery, blokey and beefy, and if there's any pretence about it, it's that it's pretending to be somewhere else: the South Island backblocks, from the looks of things.

So, what and where is it?

The Craftsman on the corner of Cambridge and Courtenay?

Yes indeed: the former Calzone, now taken over by the Bristol people and turned into a combination of steakhouse and pub.

I walked past there yesterday. No one was in it... instead they were all sitting at tables out on the street.

It seems like it might be popular with tourists staying at the backpackers down Cambridge Terrace.

I want to say Hummingbird but I don't think that's it..

Eagles may soar, but rats don't get sucked into jet engines. <:3)--

After three vodka Martinis, it looks like the Mattherhorn.

I duuno, the pebbles on that bar front look pretty elitist to me.

Fucking Pebbles! I hate everything she writes. It's not elitist, it's just shit.

The Flintstones wasn't that bad was it?

And did anyone else consider WIlma Flintstone was really hot?

I assume then that you haven't seen that "other" Jetson's/Flintstones comic.

Anyway, Betty was hotter.

I love it and i enjoy this site. Roll on summer and sitting outside the Craftsman i say.
