Nothing fishy going on in this post

Submitted by The Masked Barfly on Sun, 2008-08-10 19:51.

For those of us who like public transport but really could give less than a flying fish about a certain S word, here are some tidbits to round out your weekend:

  • Perhaps we won't always have Paris - a notice of "reentry" has been sighted in its window.
  • The 'Ho won 'Best Bar in New Zealand' for like, the millionth time. Go them!
  • In happy bus news, Go Wellington has finally cottoned on to the fact that many uni students live in Hataitai and Brooklyn, so they're doing a trial extension of the #5 and #7 routes up to Kelburn. This is also good news for people who work on the Terrace but are too lazy to take a lift up to there from Lambton Quay, but not that great if you're looking for more information about it on the Metlink site.
  • The Women's Lifestyle Expo: apparently all women need to lose weight, have bad credit and like to eat chocolate. Well duh, say the Pretty Pretty Pretty girls, who happen to have an awesome Skinfood prize pack to give away that this Fly is coveting.
  • An ad on Radio Active promises two cocktails and some tapas for $15 on Wednesdays at Vintage Bar, but their out-of-date website can't confirm this.
  • In other gossip, apparently the crowds of Bridge and Tunnelers who want to go to Temperance Bar are causing some hassles for other venues on the street, with masses queuing outside. There was mention that police in riot gear have been called in, but our source, while generally very reliable, was almost as drunk as this Fly, so take it with a grain of salt.
  • Looking for a central city location for cottaging? The Council is looking to redevelop Coblestone Park on Vivian Street.
  • If you love his penis, you should have been with Joel Cosgrove in the Aro Valley yesterday for a Wellington Central Candidates' Forum.Stephen Franks was there after all: "Jousting with the Aro Valley left has its charms but they are not intellectual. Too much righteous faith and too few with an objective interest in knowledge to offer sustained challenge". A sustained challenge like, oh I don't know, winning the Wellington electorate back from the Left? Not going to happen, Frankly.

Victoria Uni has a good news article with full details of the changes to the bus routes.

Wot does a "reentry" sign signify? (I only know it in terms of space shuttles.)

Robyn's picture

Oh, the Real Estate dictionary sez:

The legal right of a Landlord to possess the property when the term for possession by a Tenant has expired.

Example: A tenant's five-year lease had expired, but he refused to leave. The landlord had the right of reentry at that time and had to call the sheriff to compel the tenant to admit him.

Whoa! Summon the sherrif to Lambtontown!

So. We nearly had Paris.

There's more than just rumours about the queueing at the Temperance: it's already causing concern in High Places. Though the mutterings I heard the other night about the place being nearly empty inside, implying that either their door handling is woefully inefficient or they're deliberately trying to create an inflated sense of value through visible queues, are definitely just rumours.

Don't you think a visible queue line is even more tragic than a vpl?

Joanna's picture

Pretty much yes, there's nothing in the world that I'd queue for. Umm, except for Atomic on New Year's. And we were pretty stoked when we heard that our AWAs had a queue.

Two more points to add to you, Fly:
- Our beloved Greenland is now offering soup from 12-2pm on Tuesdays-Thursdays. Also, does everyone know about their prepaid coffee cards? Ten large coffees for $35 in this part of town is pretty unheard of!
- A sushi shop is opening in Newtown on the 17th, on Riddiford St next to the bridal shop and Hobsonville Antiques. I suppose this contravines the promise of nothing fishy in this post, however.

Hadyn's picture

Or ten small ones for $30. It's just their prices times ten, but it's still the reason I stopped going to Fuel

Joanna's picture

Nah their large coffees are $4 I think, so you're saving 50 cents on every coffee, and they're buying your loyalty.

Hadyn's picture

But their small's are $3! Am I getting gypped!?!

Joanna's picture

Now I'm not entiiiiiiiiiiirely sure about their prices, perhaps someone should pop in and check today. But I'm pretty sure that their large coffees would be more than $3.50

So if you're paying $3 for a single small coffee, I'm thinking you're getting a special deal cos you're pretty. But again, I can't testify to their prices.

Hadyn's picture

No I'm totally right.
$3 for a long black and my small coffee discount card cost me $25.

Green Land rock the party

Brews with milk are $3.50.. unless you take your own cup and save $0.50 :))

It may be time for the Fly to a) put up a B&T analogue map of Wellington so we can finally gauge its level of sneerage, or b) shut up :-)

Joanna's picture

Please sir, what's an analogue map?

I meant a map that's analogous to another map.

Oh, very sneery, I hope!

Is there yet anywhere in Wellington where you can get a pie floater?

Robyn's picture

NOMZ

You can get pie floaters in Adelaide, and Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Sydney and Newcastle do the tiger:

Eye of the Tiger

I'm not sure if such pleasures are available here, but, srsly, I want one NOW.

Incidentally, a book has recently been published about pie carts, called The Great New Zealand Pie Cart by Lindsay Neill and Claudie Bell.

Also, om nom nom nom nomz.

If theres not, the SHOULD BE!

Ohm nom nom x 911.

llew's picture

Has anyone actually tried a legendary pie sandwich?

I was roundly scorned the other day when I suggested a lasagne sandwich. That's the difference between daughters & sons I imagine, a son would've been out there instantly, buttering the bread.

Robyn's picture

One of my workmates had one last week. There was a bit of "Eeeew!" from the ladies, but he declared it to be delicious.

Hadyn's picture

I have had a pie sandwich (albiet with a microwave pie, though that made it easier to eat), I have also had a lasagne sandwich.

Both of them made the man I am today (stands majestically with hands on hips).

I can confirm the Wednesday Vintage deal. The tapas are small snacky things but as long as you've actually had dinner they are good!
