Square Foot Garden

Submitted by Hadyn on Wed, 2008-05-21 10:30.

As part of the "city's trendy urban class" (as we have been called) many of us choose to exist in the heart of the city. A place where a garden is a luxury and where growing your own food (beyond a crappy herb garden on the windowsill) is not even thought of.

But now Wired.com's How-to Wiki has come to the rescue of inner-city farmers, with it's Square-Foot Garden.

Square foot gardening is a variation on what's known as the French Intensive or Biointensive method of farming.

...while you might only be able to fit one tomato plant in a square, it isn't hard to stuff in a whole bunch of carrots, onions or other smaller vegetables.

On the downside, you won't be able to create a corn maze come October. But with a little work, you should have fresh veggies on the table well through the end of summer.

So get to it greenthumbs. And when we discover how make a square-foot dairy farm, we'll tell you.

You can make a square-foot dairy farm using pygmy goats. Probably.

Holy hell yes! I want to do this, and now that I have a bokashi bin the urban hippy in me has been well and truly activated. I still have a daydream that involves a high rise apartment and with stacks of tires growing potatoes on the roof, edible vines growing down the walls, water features, tatami, high speed internet and a cat.

Bring back spiralina shakes! Lets hear it for sprouting stuff!

(Must. Curb. Enthusiasm!!!!!!)

What's a bokashi bin? (I may google it shortly). I have a worm farm, anything like that?

Hey Cloves, let's get some buckets and plant some potatoes this weekend, yes?

I tell ya what, there's nothing better than freshly dug new potatoes for Christmas dinner. We might employ the bucket technique too.

I have potatoes in a bucket, thanks to llew. They're looking good already.

Have you had any luck with Agrias? They are my one true love.

llew's picture

I've never heard of them!

But yams work too.

Hadyn's picture

They're the ones that are good for roasting or chips right?

Jersey bennies are definitely boil with mint and serve with butter

Agrias are really yellow, brilliant for roasting, for chipping and especially for mashing with mounds of cream and butter.

Actually, I know it says there's no room for corn, but Mrs Llew did a clever thing last season - she planted 5 or 6 tiny corn plants in a small circle. A couple of weeks later she planted beans within the circle.

That's right, the corn grew, providing a climbing frame for the beans. Fecking brilliant!
