Wellingtonista Film Season continues

Submitted by Anna on Wed, 2008-10-08 12:20.

Tonight in the special Wellingtonista season of NZ feature films, either roughly related to, shot or set in our lovely capital city (and what a typically brilliant answer to yesterday's weather bomb than this beautiful day?) we have the hilarious feature Mark II, as selected by ourselves.

This film is worth viewing for the high-waisted jeans alone....

And it's a road movie which follows three unemployed Maori teenagers adventuring in a two tone Mark II Zephyr!

Tickets $8 or $6 concession - which includes a complimentary glass of wine (with ID) unless you can tell us which year it was shot and we'll give you a double pass. Film commences 7pm.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mark II!

I loved the geographic jumping around - how "Otara" had steep hills in the background, not unlike the Hutt Valley, and how one of the guys was hassled by the pigs out side the McDonald's in Newtown, South Auckland.

And if you are a nice white girl who lives in suburban parts unknown (looking a lot like Lower Hutt) and you want to show your brown brethren that you are down with their ethnic jive, then decorate your lounge with Goldie prints and buy a Maori carving from a tourist shop.

Something that really interested me in this film was the striking similarity between the Kingi character (on the right in the photo, played by Nicholas Roger) and a young Rodney So'oialo (though ironically, it's not particularly apparent in the above photo). To the extent that for a while every time he appeared on the screen, I kept glancing to the left and the right to see if Jerry Collins was ranging up in support (see for e.g. ~1:45).

Ditto the Eddie character (on the left, played by Mitchell Manuel), who resembled a late-90s Lio Falaniko.

It was shot in 1927.

You've been waiting your whole life to drop that one Baz..... ;-)

Not quite: I had to persuade Clarence G. Badger to make the damn film in the first place, so it's only most of my life.

Worth it, though.

Who cares about wellington... no one days except bitches from wellington

Yee-yah. Peace II my 274 posse, keeping it realer than real on the mean streetz of Mt Eden. Public transport, y'all.

Was "274" googling for "Otara"? How terribly disappointed s/he must have been to end up here!

Sadly we are mere bitches from Wellington who care about the place, and not really much about Otara.

Perhaps Mr/Ms 274 would like to start up the Otaraista to fulfil his/her need to find cool things written about the place they live in and love.

That's awesome.
From now on if my Googling doesn't give me exactly what I want I'm leaving a comment that says "fuck yous bitches"

A review of Mark II appeared on Texture.co.nz recently...
